The Emblem of India: The Lion Capital of Ashoka

The State Emblem of India is derived from the Lion Capital erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE at Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. This remarkable sculpture once crowned a sandstone pillar to mark the site where Buddha first shared his teachings of Dharma.

The capital features four majestic Asiatic lions standing back to back, symbolising power, courage, confidence, and pride. In the official emblem, only three lions are visible, the fourth being hidden from view.

Adopted as the National Emblem of India on 26 January 1950, the Lion Capital embodies the spirit of India’s republic — justice, truth, and dharma(righteousness) guiding governance and society.

More than a mere emblem, the Lion Capital is a reminder of India’s civilisational values — the harmony of strength and compassion, the pursuit of justice, and the guiding principle that truth prevails above all.
