Udaipur: The City of Lakes and Legacy

Nestled in the Aravalli hills of Rajasthan, Udaipur was founded in 1559 CE by Maharana Udai Singh II, a ruler of the Sisodia Rajput dynasty of Mewar. It rose as a refuge after the fall of Chittorgarh to the Mughals, and soon blossomed into a regal seat of power, art, and architecture.

Udaipur’s soul lies in its lakes—Pichola, Fateh Sagar, and Udai Sagar—and in the grand palaces that float beside them. The City Palace, a towering testament to Rajput valour and refinement, was built and expanded over four centuries by successive Maharanas.

Among its most revered rulers is Maharana Pratap, who resisted Mughal rule in the legendary Battle of Haldighati. His courage is etched into India’s memory as a symbol of

Udaipur is one of the oldest surviving dynasties in the world, tracing its lineage to the Sun God (Suryavanshi). Even during British rule, the rulers of Udaipur retained a rare autonomy, refusing to bow entirely.

Today, Udaipur blends history with hospitality. The royal family, led by Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar, continues to steward the city's cultural heritage, maintaining museums, temples, and conservation trusts. Known as the Venice of the East, Udaipur remains a living canvas of stone, water, legacy, and light.
