About the Coin
In the rich tapestry of Great Maratha coinage, the gold Hon coin holds a place of unparalleled significance. This exceptional coin, commissioned by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself, bears a two-line obverse inscription reading "Chhatra / pati" and a three-line Nagari legend on the reverse, "Shri / Raja / Shiva"
Historical records indicate that Shivaji Maharaj ordered the creation of these gold coins at Raigadh Fort in AD 1664. Another chapter of Maratha history recounts that around 800 of these coins were specially minted and ceremonially showered upon Shivaji Maharaj's head during his coronation in 1674. Despite their historical importance, only a few specimens of these rare Maratha coins have survived to the present day, from the era of this renowned warrior-king. The majority of these precious tokens were, unfortunately, melted down for their gold content, often by those unaware of their true value. These relics of history stand as a testament to the legacy of the Great Maratha King. This legacy continues to inspire and captivate those who delve into the rich heritage of Indian civilisation.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
He was born in 1630 in the hill fort of Shivneri, near Pune. He carved out an independent Maratha kingdom from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur. Shivaji was known for his innovative military tactics, governance reforms, and building a strong navy. He constructed a series of forts along the western coast for defence and established a competent administration.
He was known for his respect towards women and non-combatants and he implemented progressive laws. He was crowned as Chhatrapati, or the King of the Marathas, in 1674 in a grand coronation ceremony. Shivaji’s rule was characterised by the promotion of Sanskrit and the patronage of native art and culture. He forged alliances with various powers, displaying political acumen, and expanded the Maratha Empire. Shivaji passed away in 1680, leaving behind an enduring legacy that inspired later generations of the Maratha Empire.
His life and deeds are celebrated as symbols of Indian nationalism, integrity, and wisdom.
