The Sarnath Lion Capital

The Sarnath Lion Capital was erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE at Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The original sculpture once crowned a sandstone pillar at the place where Buddha is believed to have first shared his teachings of Dharma.

The capital features four majestic lions standing back to back, often understood as symbols of strength, courage, confidence, and dignity. Below them are finely carved forms, including the Dharma Chakra, which represents the path of truth, wisdom, and righteous action.

More than an ancient sculpture, the Sarnath Lion Capital remains one of India’s most powerful symbols of civilisational heritage. It carries the quiet harmony of strength and compassion, and the timeless idea that truth and dharma must guide life.

This brass bookmark is an artistic interpretation inspired by the historic Sarnath Lion Capital and is not a replica.
